Welcome
We are thrilled that you have chosen to stay at Two Rivers Ohakune. We invite you to sit back, relax and enjoy our environment. Two Rivers Ohakune is all about eco-luxury, serenity and privacy.
Ula and Scott purchased Two Rivers in July 2024, in that time we have much to improve the facilities you see. We've listened to guest feedback, responded and improved. We are keen to hear from you, so if you have suggestions or requirements during your stay then please tell us.
We have received regular reviews from Tourism New Zealand, and have progressed from 3 stars plus to 4 stars plus. We've also moved into the eco-luxury segment and we have been awarded the highest Gold sustainability rating. We have solar, EV charging (daytime only), battery backups and we are restoring our riverbanks. Our rooms are boutique by design, they are quick to warm (or cool), efficient, and designed for our many guests who stay 2 or 3 nights. Our journey has led to Two Rivers winning the nationally recognised Rising Star B&B of the year award for 2026.
Our only aim is to make you comfortable, indeed most guests tell us we offer a 5 star service. We want you to leave Two Rivers feeling as if you've had the best possible experience. If something doesn't meet your expectation then please tell us during your stay.
For now, our aim is to leave you to enjoy the peace, tranquility and mounts views that our mountain views and streams deliver. Your suite is now your private space, but we are available to support you in any way you may need. WhatsApp is the preferred way of communicating, but please contact us any way you choose.
Internet and Media
Wi-Fi
Yes. Two Rivers has ultra-fast broadband. A modern mesh system covers the property and gardens, giving Wi-Fi 7 levels of connectivity. You will find a wooden wifi porter in your suite. You can simply touch your phone against this, or on the rear you will find a QR code and network password. Our internet is unlimited and fast.
Like many organisations we use Captive Wi-Fi so that we can monitor internet usage. We are GDPR compliant and will only email you if you have selected that option.
Cell Phone Coverage
In rural areas there can be mixed qualities of signals. Spark and 2degrees are both well served here and 5G is available. Please connect to the Wi-Fi if you experience issues, and feel free to use Wi-Fi Calling, or your preferred messenger app.
Television
The televisions are all ethernet cabled where possible. We have provided Netflix, Amazon Prime and Neon services. If you want to watch 'normal' television then we recommend using the FreeView app.
We understand that some guests want to change the language on the TV or to use your own login for TV services. That is perfectly acceptable, but please tell us that you have done so. We can then reset the TV for the next guest so they do not use your Netflix (or other) account.
In Your Suite
Seating arrangements
Shortly after purchasing Two Rivers, Scott and Ula were told that the bistro style seating arrangements was uncomfortable and did not reflect luxury. We had to agree. The bistro seating was replaced with comfortable armchairs and a low table to create space and a more appropriate seating area. Additionally, we noted that many guests take break breakfast on the deck, where bistro style seating is available. The seating in your room reflect the requests and expectations of many of our guests.
However, we note that some guests - particularly with infirmities - may prefer a higher seat. If this is the case, then please do not struggle. Instead speak to us and we will remove the comfortable chair(s) and provide a high back chair for you instead. The cosy nature of the rooms means it is not possible to meet every circumstance, but we do have the ability to make you comfortable if you ask. We would hate for you to leave, and then advise us that you were uncomfortable - it goes our every objective.
Breakfast
We understand that many B&Bs offer a breakfast where you sit with other guests. Our approach is to offer privacy and flexibility. We try hard to communicate this difference to our guests and agents on our website and in other communications. The majority of people who stay here are specifically searching for this privacy. The hamper means you can leave early for a mountain adventure, or rest a little longer and relax over breakfast at your own pace. The majority of our guests have told us they do not like to eat between fixed times, and prefer the flexibility that we offer.
We are a sustainable organisation and the items in your hamper reflect what we can purchase in our small local supermarket. Purchasing locally is good for the environment, and it supports our local shopkeeper, the staff and our local community. We are too small of an operation to buy foodstuffs in bulk. So your breakfast items were purchased on the morning of your arrival. It is rare for guests to stay more than three nights, but if you are staying longer then we will provide another hamper during your stay.
We provide enough plates, bowls, cups and glasses for a 2 night stay. We will happily take these used items away and provide clean items at any point if you ask us.
Generally guests enjoy the breakfast provisions, and usually there are unused items. However, we know that some guests have larger appetites, and if you need more supplies then please ask. Based on experience we provide more than most guests will consume, but we genuinely want you to be satisfied. If you need more teas or coffees during your stay then please ask.
Over 60% of our guests are from Europe, they have asked us to provide meats and cheeses, and in particular rye bread. We have standardised on this approach as it has led to generally positive feedback. If you have comments about the breakfast then we are keen to learn what is right for you and your culture. We may be able to change things for future guests in some cases.
Hot Tubs
The Rua Awa and Mangawhero suites have private hot tubs. We are very clear to state that the Mangateitei suite does not have this facility. However, if you would like to use the hot tub and one of the other rooms is vacant on an evening then we are more than happy for you to ask for access. Spa Towels are provided (rolled up) for your convenience. If you are travelling as a group of four and using the Mangawhero room, then it is perfectly acceptable to share that hot tub.
The hot tubs have privacy screens for your modesty and to make sure that Ula and Scott maintain our discretion. Please ask if you are unsure how to use them.
You are welcome to take beverages into the hot tubs, but we ask that you use plastic cups. Broken glass is a health and safety issue. It requires full water replacement, which can take up to 48 hours to heat, and you will likely deny yourself and following guests the use of this facility.
The hot tub is set for 39° and we ask you not to alter this. The next guest may not be happy to find it at higher/lower level and it has a significant impact on our solar system. Your are welcome to turn the lights on/off as needed. The only other control you should use is the 'jets' function. The 'blower' option will rapidly cool the water and reduce the length of time you can use the pool.
If you have any questions then please ask. If you make any changes then please tell us.
Laundry
Please ask if you have items that need washing. You are very welcome to use our household laundry subject to all linen being processed. We do not charge for this service, but we do ask that you load/unload the washer, and we will provide a basket and drying rack. Note that we do not have a tumble drier, and we dry all items sustainably. Additionally, there is a public laundromat in the town that is next to "The Chocolate Eclair Shop" (next to the BP).
Towels and Linens
At Two Rivers we own all of the towels and linens used, everything is washed after every stay. This leads to large amounts of washing and drying, and we try to use Solar Energy as much as possible. We ask that you re-use towels, but if you are staying more than 2 nights then we will happily supply fresh towels for the third night. If you require more then please ask.
The rolled towels are the largest towels available and are ideal for hot tub usage.
Housekeeping
At Two Rivers we have employed a local housekeeper who is amongst the very best in the area. She has a superb attention to detail and takes significant pride in her work. If there is anything in your room that is not to your satisfaction then please tell us and we will make it right. Her work has been important in Two Rivers gaining our Tourism NZ award and Quality Assessed status from the B&B Association NZ.
Your room was prepared to exacting standards, including a full linen replacement, before your arrival. It will next be cleaned after your departure. If you are staying more than three nights and would like a housekeeping visit then please ask. As previously mentioned, most of our guests are looking for absolute privacy and generally do not require this service. We are here to make your stay as comfortable as possibly, if you need assistance in anyway please ask.
Drying Room
Rua Awa has a storage room next to the parking area which can be used for additional storage and for drying any outdoor equipment. We invite you to use the dehumidifier and/or heaters to dry your clothes. The small key on your keyring will give you access.
Mangateitei and Mangawhero have a shared drying facility on the deck for your equipments. The small key on your keyring will give you access. Please be respectful of other guests equipment.
Smoking and Vaping
Very, very few of our guests smoke or vape and all guests room the highest standards of room presentation. Therefore, we ask you not to smoke or vape in the rooms or on the decks. You are welcome to smoke near the rivers, in your car or at the entrance to the parking area. Our smoking policy is clearly stated in our online terms and conditions.
Parking
Each suite has one dedicated parking spot. It is very rare that guests arriving have more than one vehicle, but please ask if it is the case. We may be able to accommodate an extra vehicle in the grounds, but it may be that roadside parking is needed.
Irons and Ironing Boards
Irons and Ironing Boards are available upon request. They are needed so infrequently that we store them away from the rooms. Please just ask.
Additional visitors to Two Rivers
Due to fire regulations, only two people may be present in any guest suite, with a maximum of six guests on site.
If you wish to invite 'additional guests' to Two Rivers then please discuss this with Scott and Ula as a matter of courtesy. If we agree, then we request you all maintain the peace and quiet of other guests be respected at all times. Your guests will be asked to leave if we receive complaints from other paying guests. Additional guests must depart before 9PM in respect for Scott/Ula and any other guests. Non-compliance will be treated as a breach of our terms and conditions and you will be asked to depart with no refund.
Saying good bye
We care about our guests and we want to say goodbye whenever possible, but please do not feel obliged. We understand that you may have a long drive and just want to go - that's perfectly fine. Please do what is best for you. Ula and Scott both work full time as well as running Two Rivers, sometimes we have meetings in the morning and may not be available. If you would like to speak to us when you depart then it may be best to send a WhatsApp message and we will confirm with you or otherwise follow up.
Check Out Time
Our check out time is 10:30. This gives our housekeeper sufficient time to prepare all three rooms for the next guests if needed. If you need a late checkout then please ask as early as possible in your stay and we will endeavour to be as flexible as possible.
Keys
There is a metal sign on the side of the house near the front door with a letterbox under it. This is the best way of returning keys if you do not want to say goodbye. Some guests will leave the keys on the bed, there may be times that we ask you not to do this.
Breakages
Sometimes accidents happen and things are broken. We understand and appreciate that. We just ask that you tell us as early as possible in your stay so that we can replace the items for you, or arrange for repairs to be made before the next guests arrive. This is particularly important in our busy summer season. We are very accepting, but just ask for your assistance as early as possible to ensure the next guest has the best possible service.
Towels, linens, cups, plates etc....
Please just leave everything where it is. Our wonderful housekeeper will ensure that everything is washed and prepared to her high standards. We do understand that some guest like to wash their cups, plates and bowels, and we provide facilities for that - but we have no expectations that you will clean up. It's all included in the service.
If you would like to come back...
There are many ways that you can book to stay at Two Rivers. Our lowest prices are always provided on our website using the "Book Now" button. Booking direct with any small accommodation provider ensures that the money remains local and maximises the growth and quality of that business, rather than going off-shore.
Lights, fans and security
We are a sustainable organisation and seek to reduce electricity usage. Please turn off electric blankets, heating, and lights. However, we do ask you to keep the bathroom light on when you depart. The fan will extract any moisture in the suite and keep it healthy for future guests.
Scott or Ula may ask you to return the keys to the drop box on the side of the house in some circumstances. If that is the case then please close and lock all doors and windows for security purposes.
Emergencies...
Alarms
You may here two alarms during your stay. The first will be in your room and this is a smoke detector. Please note that this is cross linked with other guest rooms and the house. If you burn the toast, everyone will know. The other alarm you may here will be across the town and sounds like an air-raid siren. This is for our local volunteer fire brigade ONLY. It is not a warning of any type for you to be concerned about.
Earthquakes, Tsunami and Volcanoes
While we are some way from major fault lines, you may experience an earthquake during your stay. It is exceptionally rare that this will be violent. If you are concerned, then drop to the floor and cover your head.
The elevation of Ohakune means that no tsunami will reach us.
Mt Ruapehu is an active volcano and is usually at a slightly heightened state of unrest. Typically eruptions occur every 30 years. Events are typically short-lived, with ash blowing away from Ohakune due to prevailing winds. Our neighbour has lived in Ohakune since 1950 and has only seen a thin layer of ash once in his time here. If there is any activity you're not certain of then please remain in your room, close all windows/doors and wait for instructions.
Fire
We provide a fire-extinguisher in every room, but our preference is that you vacate and keep safe. The rooms all have smoke alarms that will sound for all residents. Evacuate to the meeting point at the entrance to the car park. Dial 111 and ask for the fire service. Give them our address: Two Rivers Ohakune, 44 Burns Street, Ohakune. Our priority is your safety.
Flood
Clearly we live next to Two Rivers. They do rise and fall rapidly. Higher river levels are most likely from late October to Christmas, when the snow is melting and heavy rain falls may arrive. It is extremely unlikely that your accommodation will flood. However, there is a roadway directly opposite our main gate which goes up fill. Please evacuate to that location if you have any concerns. Scott and Ula will be monitoring river levels in such times and will provide guidance.
Accidents and health care
Accidents happen. Our decks can be very icy/frosty in winter, and we have invested in anti-slip carpets and grip tape to protect you. Lighting is provided in the deck, in the evenings. Solar lamps are provided for curfew hours.
Scott is a trained/certified first aider and will respond if needed, please ask for assistance. We have a first-aid kit available in the house. We generally have paracetamol in the house which we can supply, but we cannot provide any other form of medication. There is a healthcare depot in the town centre for over the counter remedies. There is a surgery in Raetihi, a minor injury unit in Taumarunui, and an Emergency Room in Whanganui. If you feel that your life is in danger then please dial 111 and ask for an ambulance - the address is Two Rivers Ohakune, 44 Burns Street, Ohakune, 4625.
Anything else?
It is impossible to describe every circumstance or eventuality in this page. If you require any other assistance or information then we simply ask you to communicate with us. We are here to help you get the most from your stay at Two Rivers, Ohakune and the Ruapehu area.
We are passionate about guests leaving with the best experience possible.
The majority of our online reviews are a 9 or 10. Our hope is that every guest would leave feeling that Two Rivers is worthy of that score. We accept that we make mistakes, but if something isn't right then please speak to us so that we have an opportunity to correct the situation before you depart.
