A Romantic Getaway in Ohakune

There's a particular kind of magic that happens when you leave the motorway behind, drop down into the Central Plateau, and feel the pace of life quietly shift. Ohakune does that to you. Tucked at the base of Mt Ruapehu, with rivers threading through native forest and the mountain filling the skyline, it's the kind of place that asks you to slow down - and rewards you generously when you do.

For couples looking for a weekend that feels genuinely restorative, Ohakune delivers something that busy resort towns rarely can: stillness, beauty, and space to simply be together.

Why Ohakune Works for a Romantic Escape

Most people know Ohakune for skiing.  But beyond the winter season, the town reveals a quieter, more intimate character - one that suits couples far better than the snow crowds suggest.

The setting does much of the work.  Rivers run alongside accommodation on the edge of town, native beech forest climbs the mountain road, and on a clear night the Milky Way stretches overhead with startling clarity.  It's the kind of place where you find yourselves standing still, glass of wine in hand, just watching the light change on the mountain.

The town itself is small enough to feel personal, but surprisingly well-served with good food, coffee, and things to do - without ever feeling like you're being rushed through an itinerary.

Things to Do (At Whatever Pace You Like)

Start slowly.  A riverside walk into town sets the tone perfectly.  Stop at the Nook for excellent coffee or settle into Utopia for a leisurely brunch.  Neither will hurry you along.

Get out into nature.  Two walks in particular are worth your time.  The Mangawhero Forest Walk immerses you in mountain beech forest at the foot of the mountain road - it's quiet, sensory, and genuinely calming.  The Mangawhero River Walk can also be cycled if you prefer wheels to feet.  TCB in the heart of town offers cycle hire and shuttles to help you make the most of the area's trails, including the wider Mountains to Sea network and the impressive Old Coach Road.

After a ride, the junction end of town rewards you well.  Frank's Eatery and Bar is a reliable lunch stop, while Opus Fresh - housed in the old railway station - offers excellent coffee and tea beside a roaring fire.  It's the kind of place you sit down for twenty minutes and leave an hour later.  Opus Fresh is possibly the best retail therapy in town as well.

Treat yourselves.  Day spa facilities in the area offer couples massages, sauna, and spa experiences.  For something more local, consider a distillery tour or, subject to opening times, a cellar door visit at the town's award-winning breweryVolcano Vibe, the local artist collective, is worth your time - whether you want to get hands-on with art or simply browse.

Evenings.  For a small town, Ohakune punches well above its weight after dark.  There's often something on - live music, a gin mixology evening, or a film at Raetihi's beautifully restored Royal Theatre.  When it comes to dinner, the options range from gourmet burgers to genuinely high-end meals.  Our personal recommendation, and a place we have a special relationship with, is The Cypress Tree - consistently excellent and well worth booking ahead.

The Slow Moments

All of that said, the most memorable parts of a romantic stay in Ohakune tend to be the unscheduled ones.  Sitting outside with a view.  A glass of wine as the sun drops behind the mountain.  The sound of a river just beyond the window.  These quieter moments have a way of becoming the ones you talk about long after you're home.

One experience stands out above the rest: Ohakune Hot Tubs offers wood-fired hot tubs under an open sky.  On a clear night, with the stars overhead and no particular reason to be anywhere else, it's as romantic as this part of New Zealand gets.

Where to Stay for a Quiet, Romantic Experience

Choosing the right place to stay is one of the most important parts of any getaway.  Boutique accommodation really is the option of choice here.  Unlike larger or more social accommodation, boutique stays tend to offer:

  • Fewer rooms and more privacy

  • Thoughtful design and higher comfort

  • Peaceful, nature-based settings

We’re biased, but Two Rivers Ohakune ticks so many boxes that couples are looking for.  From private guest rooms, recently refurbished rooms, in-room breakfasts, and a relaxed check-out time that just gives you the time to slow down.

Final Thoughts

A romantic getaway in Ohakune doesn’t need to be complicated.

With the right place to stay and a little space in your plans, it becomes a chance to slow down, enjoy the surroundings, and spend time together without distraction.

In a place defined by rivers, mountains, and open space, the experience is less about doing more — and more about enjoying the time you have.
