For something more local, consider a distillery tour or, subject to opening times, a cellar door visit at the town's award-winning brewery. Volcano Vibe, the local artist collective, is worth your time - whether you want to get hands-on with art or simply browse.

There's often something on - live music, a gin mixology evening, or a film at Raetihi's beautifully restored Royal Theatre. When it comes to dinner, the options range from gourmet burgers to genuinely high-end meals.
