Scott and Ula took over the ownership and operations of Two Rivers in July 2024. At the time Two Rivers had a phenomenal booking.com score of 9.3, which by January 2025 had increased to 9.5.
We are 100% committed to guest satisfaction. The feedback that we've received tells us that Two Rivers is an ideal place to refresh, the sound of the rivers, the views of the mountain and the clean air. It's good for the soul! To help you feel refreshed when you leave, we've decided to refresh our offering. This blog tells you some of the changes in place or planned for the very near future.

This is our story of Refreshing Rooms at Two Rivers Ohakune.

We knew that the previous owners had done an amazing job, and so change has been introduced slowly, methodically and in response to guest feedback. We have listened and we've responded. Guests are looking for luxury, they want an experience and not just a room for the night. We quickly realised that winter guests have different needs to summer (international) guests. Winter guests were domestic, travelling with small bags and found the rooms to be cosy, warm and luxurious. Summer guests generally have bigger suitcases and were looking for more space and comfort. We needed to respond, so that our international guests go home and tell great stories.

We've ordered three custom beds based on the design below. The legs will be longer, allowing even the largest suitcases to be stored underneath. Matching small bed side tables will take up less space in the room and increase usable space:

We've also listened regarding having comfortable chairs to sit in, the bistro tables and chairs have done well, they're great for eating breakfast, but not for kicking back and reading a book, so new chairs are inbound and will be delivered imminently:

We had already introduced new bedding and new crockery as a part of an early refresh to put our mark on the lodge: Refreshing Rooms at Two Rivers Ohakune Refreshing Rooms at Two Rivers Ohakune

In preparation for the new furniture arriving, we've also repainted the first of the three rooms. Mangawhero has been used extensively in the last few months, as our most popular room, and so the normal bangs and scrapes detracted from the quality and luxury that we wanted to project.

We've gone lighter on the walls than before, using Resene Merino for an elegance and warmth that we've used in previous homes. The bathrooms have used the Dulux colours, Antarctica Lake Half and Duck Egg Blue which gives a really nice feel and brings out the theme of Two Rivers. The latter colour has also been brought out in the bedroom as an accent in the kitchenette.

For now, new curtains and privacy nets complete the new look, or at least until the new beds and chairs arrive.

Our first post renovation guests have just arrived and checked in at the time of writing this and they were suitably impressed. Our intention is to maintain that reaction. We value our guest feedback, and to have such a high booking.com score is a real plus, but now we want to increase guest satisfaction further and maintain or even increase that score.
Scott has a tendency to get overly excited about design matters, though his 18-year-old son will often put him back in his place. Josh, who is training as an architect at Victoria University of Wellington actually gave a thumbs up, which is the closest we get to a seal of approval. We're hoping we've got these changes right and that our guests enjoy their stays with us even more.
